Meet the Staff: Chellie

We are excited to introduce you to our newest member of the Joan Hawkins Art & Interiors staff, Chellie Revord! Chellie will act as our business manager, working with operations to make everything run smoothly. Welcome to the team!

Hometown:  I grew up in Columbus, Mississippi and even went to college at MUW.

How did you get started in the design world?
While I'm not a professional, I've always been interested in design and how it impacts our lives. A room may calm or encourage inspiration and it's fun to play with designs to create the mood. But, at JHAI I see my role more in the business end of the company behind the scenes making sure the foundation of the day to day operations are completed.

If you could pick any style for your own home, what would it be?
I would definitely say eclectic. I'm very sentimental, so I have accessories from 1919 that belonged to my grandmother paired with a modern piece, but somehow it works. I have a teak bar that was hand carved for my dad when he was in Korea. It doesn't go with anything but I'll never give it up.

Where do you find design inspiration?
I lwatch Joan as she's creating ideas. I love seeing her listen to customers' ideas and then help them create their dream. Sometimes she has these incredible inspirations that continue to grow as she pulls items, fabric swatches and furniture together, while other times she knows exactly what she wants to create. But even with that, an incredible amount of thought has gone into the planning. Inspiration is in everything. You just have to find it.

What is a project you worked on that you were proud of? What made it so special?
As a newbee, Joan gave me the opportunity to help with a small project.  Her positive comments and words of encouragement meant so much, especially when she said she wouldn't change a thing. I think what made it so special is the fact she gave me a few suggestions, then just said have fun with it... and I did!

Favorite item currently in the store?
I love everything in the shop, so trying to identify a favorite item is difficult. My favorite item that was in the store is now in my new home! It's a glass herb planter with 3 small bowls supported in a wooden base, but rather than herbs it houses this incredible blue beach glass. I love the way Joan uses an item for a different purpose.

Favorite Fondren restaurant?
Restaurants in Fondren are fabulous! I'll just continue to eat at all of them, so maybe in a year or so I'll have a favorite....but don't count on it.

What do you love most about working at Joan Hawkins Art & Interiors?
I think the best part about working at JHAI would be the people. It's not only the incredibly talented folks I work with, but we wouldn't be here without the clients.  Their happiness and excitement with a completed project is a gift that's never taken for granted.

Fall NY Now Market Wrap-Up

It's hard to believe it's been almost three weeks since I was in NYC for market!  I have only spent a total sum of seven of the last 26 days back home in Jackson since attending the show.
With back to back installation deadlines on two different out of town projects following my return from market, I have been the proverbial "one armed paper hanger."  Thank you, first, to my children, Abigail and Charles, who have endured a 'mother in absentia' during the first week of school, first AND second 'home' football games and all the other 'firsts' of the new school year!  Thank you second to my staff for "holding up the rear."

Back to the blog... NYNOW Fall 2015: It was great to visit with vendors and see their latest introductions. Take a look at just a few that will be arriving at the shop in the upcoming months!

Judy Jackson Stoneware. I have admired Judy's work for years. From bright and vibrant hues to delicate and smoky whites, her vessels are both modern and versatile.

Soko. The artisan craft industry is the second largest employer in the developing world. It is also the most disenfranchised. With that in mind, Soko was founded on the belief that innovation can empower women, can connect markets, and can foster opportunities that change lives. Each piece is designed and made by different artisans from across the globe.

Rule of Three may look familiar because we already carry this beautiful line of hand marbleized silk pillows in the shop! I caught up with Rule of Three's founder, Paige Cleveland (below).  She is so talented. Paige has expanded her offerings this season. Since I saw her last, she has added custom, hand marbleized silk, fully lined curtains, lampshades, upholstered ottomans, and framed art panels to her line.  In addition are new and stunning colorways of her boutique custom pillow line!

Walter G presented handsomely designed, graphic patterned pillows at the show - shades of greige, chalk, indigo and saffron - the color palate was striking and specific. Best of all, they're already at the shop! A duo from Australia, Walter G's designs are hand blocked and unique with, as they describe, a "livable" feel and look.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw Talini Home's display of custom bedding.  Disguisedly   simple, their work is incredibly rich in the attention to detail and workmanship.  I can not wait to get our display set up in the shop. I have no doubt this line will sell itself!

Most Modest's newest "power pendant" named Niko will also make it's way to shop soon.
